Note: In order to raise awareness and properly pay tribute to our union's history, we present the following article taken from the book The Men Who Labor published in 1937. It describes the events surrounding the infamous BLOODY THURSDAY and the life of Harry Bridges, the founder of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU). The boyhood life of Bridges is briefly examined to demonstrate what influences exerted themselves upon this incredible man as well as his work as a sailor and longshoreman, his arrival in the United States, and concluding with his rise to power as a maritime union officer.
